What does it mean to tend?

One of the most significant tenets for us as a company is the idea of tending.

That is, tending to the earth, our community, our customers, and to our employees in Seattle through the way we conduct business and create our product. This is, and has always been one of the key goals of Frankie and Jo’s; tending is a pillar of our company, and we always work our hardest to make tending one of our most defining attributes.

We want our ice cream to be as good for the environment as it is for the health and wellness of our customers, while still being a creamy and delicious treat. To minimize our environmental impact as best we can, we have a strong focus on using as few ingredients in our product as possible, and only using ingredients that are sustainably sourced and less processed than most. Which is why this month we created three flavors that are alternatively sweetened with our favorite sugars; coconut sugar, maple syrup, and California dates. We as a company are 100% plant-based and vegan, because we believe a more plant-based diet and lifestyle is kinder to the earth, and we hope to inspire more plant magic in our customers' lives and in the world.

Tending to our community is extremely important to us, which is why we make it a point to purchase as many local ingredients as the seasons allow, and support our local charities and organizations by donating product and sales. But our community does not stop within our city. We support all those who believe in the same principles as us, even if they are in another state or country. We purchase organic dates from a farm in the Coachella Valley, which we use to sweeten many of our ice creams. Yesterday, we donated 100% of our sales to Australia in hopes to help tend to the animals, people, and wilderness who greatly need us from the devastating fires.

We know that without our wonderful and loyal customers, we could not exist as a company. We work hard every day to ensure that our customers receive nothing short of the best product, and the best treatment while in our shops. We’re determined to make everyone feel as though they’re the only person in the shop, even when there’s a line out the door, and to get a good understanding of everyone’s individual dietary preferences and allergy needs so that they can feel comfortable and confident in what they’re eating.

Of course, none of this would be possible without our incredibly hard working and devoted employees, both in the shops and behind the scenes. It takes a lot of great people to make a company run smoothly, and we are always working to create a healthy and enjoyable employee experience, where everyone feels fulfilled, appreciated, and a part of the larger picture.

At Frankie and Jo’s, we believe that if we can successfully demonstrate a way of doing business that focuses on tending, we can inspire a way of being and living that is a little more mindful, gentle, and inclusive. We are so glad you are a part of our journey.
