Honoring a true trailblazer: Harvey Milk

At Frankie & Jo’s, we’re no strangers to challenging the status quo, changing people’s perceptions and making them rethink their preconceived notions. We’re changing the way people think about not only ice cream, but food in general, making vegan, gluten-free, soy-free, gum and preservative free ice cream and cones that are as delicious as they are fresh, healthy, and environmentally conscious. As a progressive and forward thinking company, we want to use our platform and take the time to honor another true trailblazer: Harvey Milk.

Harvey Milk was an American politician and an outspoken Gay Rights Activist in the 1970’s. He was the first openly gay person elected to political office in California, and one of the first openly gay elected officials in the history of the United States. Though his career as a politician and activist was brief, cut short by an assassination less than a year into his time as city supervisor for San Francisco, he enacted profound change not only politically but culturally, giving a voice to the marginalized and oppressed, and his legacy lives on. He was and remains to this day a symbol of hope to members of the LGBTQ community across the country, and was pivotal in the changing landscape of the cultural sentiment towards homosexuality in the US.

To pay tribute to this American hero and champion of civil rights, and to celebrate Pride month, we are bringing back our fan favorite seasonal flavor Harvey Strawberry Milk, a rich and creamy blend of fresh strawberries and our coconut milk base with chia seeds sprinkled throughout and a swirl of perfectly sweet house-made strawberry jam. It’s the ultimate summer flavor, cool and refreshing, and it’s a delicious way to celebrate LGBTQ pride and honor revolutionary civil rights activists like Harvey Milk.

In addition, throughout the month of June, we will be donating 5% of every single scoop & pint sold of our Harvey Strawberry Milk flavor to the Harvey Milk Foundation, an organization that strives to carry on the work that Harvey Milk began before his death through such programs as education funding, community outreach, supporting pro-LGBTQ organizations, and many many more. If you’d like to learn more about the Harvey Milk Foundation, you can visit their website at http://milkfoundation.org/. Tune back in on our instagram (@frankieandjos) at the end of the month to find out the final amount raised!

We hope you’ll join us this month in celebrating the life and achievements of Harvey Milk and the countless others who have fought for the equal rights of all people, and that you’ll help us help those who are carrying on their legacy.
